From the best-selling and critically acclaimed novel by David Peace, The Damned United is directed by Tom Hooper and stars Michael Sheen as the legendary, opinionated football manager Brian Clough, with Timothy Spall as his right hand man, only friend, and crutch Peter Taylor.

Set in 1960s and 1970s England, THE DAMNED UNITED tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Cloughs doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie (Colm Meaney), and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of Dons boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Cloughs belligerence and brilliance over 44 days. Watched this last night. Good quality film; Michael Sheen and Tim Spall are great, and Stephen Graham plays a solid all-be-it minor role. If you're interested in football/soccer, this is a must see. An interesting story about an ego-driven pundit of the game.

Comes out in Australia next week.

Looks alright. I just hope it doesn't have all that guff where the English think their football is the best in the world.

Nothing of the sort, it's more a biopic on how up himself Brian Clough was, a real snide arrogant man. Actually thinking back, there really isn't any commentary on the quality, mainly just the effects due to Leeds > Derby and just the situations Clough was in around each period his early career; from under the pump against Leeds, to on top of the world and wanting more after winning the league, etc. Michael Sheen creates a really great character.

Nevertheless, the EPL is the best in the world these days. Hands down.

No way! The style of football played in that league is ugly. La Liga is a lot better IMO. Another league that has some really good football is the Porko league. Shame not a lot of it is shown (only on setanta, which we don't have). Dutch league is also good to watch.

BTW, the English football team also plays an ugly style.

They don't have any style, just a bunch of star players mushed into the same strip. Can't deny their world cup qualifying results though.

All Spain has going for it is Barca's impeccable brilliance, and then Real, but who gives a toss about them, mercenaries. The rest of the league is mediocre. English league's the best atm.

You seen Sevilla play lately? They took down Madrid the other week. Expect AT LEAST a UCL semi-final from them this season. I will probably agree with you that the quality of the league has dropped this season but it still ****s all over the Premier League. Atletico, Valencia and Villarreal have all had bad starts to the season. Atleti and Valencia should pick themselves up but I was queries over Villarreal.

Anyway, if you wanna see a real match - 7am (AEDT) Sunday, ESPN - Valencia-Barca. Delayed coverage later in the day of Depor-Sevilla (4 v 3). Some good matches on in Spain this week.
