According to
Variety, Universal Pictures is reving up a fifth film in the
Fast and Furious franchise, currently under the working title of
Fast Five.
The studio has closed deals with stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, director Justin Lin, and producer Neal Moritz to return for a fifth installment in the popular series of films, which has become one of Universal's most lucrative franchises.
Diesel and Walker sat out the third pic,
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), but returned for last year's hit
Fast & Furious, which raked in more than US$350 million worldwide, ultimately becoming Universal's top grosser of 2009.
Chris Morgan is returning to pen, making
Fast Five the third time he and director Justin Lin have collaborated for a
Fast and Furious film after
Tokyo Drift and
Fast & Furious. The story finds fugitives Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) as they outrun relentless lawman.
Shooting will start later this year for a release in theatres sometime in 2011.
