I think this will be the next Twilight.

Poor Jennifer Lawrence's career.

Hopefully she does enough to keep it credible.

Saw the trailer for this before Chronicle. I thought it looked decent. Never seen Battle Royale, but I'll give this one a look either way. Can't be as bad as Twilight, right?

Yeah same.

The trailers are still shit but the reviews I've read so far have been really encouraging.

Even if it was a bad movie, I have been given no choice but to see it. My gf never asks me to see a movie with her, so when she does ask I have to listen.

My gf has been going crazy over it since reading the book and has been hyping the film up. I wasn't excited initially.

Just got back from seeing it.
My God, it was incredibly good.
It was incredibly captivating. The whole hunt was incredibly tense, and really emotional, but in a way that really added to its overall impact rather than its cheesiness.
It's definitely a story that you can easily really get into. You just find yourself so angry at the injustice that's going on.
And the acting was flawless.
Everybody just needs to go see it.

Nah, it wasn't that bad.

But it certainly wasn't fantastic, or as good as I was expecting.

An opening 30 minutes paced like a snail, and they didn't even think to explain numerous things about the plot, which to a non-reader of the books, would have been helpful.

The action scenes are pedantic, and lacking. Close up shots for minutes, shaky cam and flashes of blood, no thanks. Could have been done much better, it suffered from Michael Bay's Transformers 2 close up syndrome.

Bad score/soundtrack - when music came on in Harry Potter I wet my pants.. in Hunger Games I yawned.

Now this one is excusable, because I think many movies which plan to have sequels do the same thing. The sets are basic, unimaginative and lack detail. But in their defence, they do have to create an entire alternate world, the quantity of manufacturing they would have to do would be immense in the first film. In the second and third I would expect much better.

In saying all this, the acting across the board is great ("Hopefully she does enough to keep it credible" quote from above, she does). The story is certainly not bad, it doesn't go over the top with the romance (though a love twiangle is present), not cheesy, brutal killings (bit over the top for a kids film, don't take an under 12), couple of minor frights, bit of tension.

I'd go see #2.

Never read any of the three books. I initially thought it would be like the Twilight films. I didn't like the trailer, but I picked up more of the film due to Showtime.
Seems to be similar to 'The Running Man' but more to the 'young adult' audience. BTW, filming is due to start on the 2nd book by Sep and due to be released sometime 2013.

After seeing the trailers I was thinking it was going to be absolute crap.

It was really good though, blew my expectations out of the water, but only like an hour into it. The first third of the film is absolute garbage, well, it seems that way, but then when it hits those emotional moments which Lawrence nails every time you kinda realize that they needed that boring ass first act.

Then literally the second the Games actually start I was right ****ing there with Katnis. That's what totally blew me away. I was sitting there bored, hating it, then the next minute I was totally engrossed.

Just that first scene of the Games where the sound dropped and you just see flashes of kids getting stabbed etc. and there was so much blood than I thought there was going to be.

If you liked the book I'm sure you'll like this, and if you didn't there's still a decent chance that you will :P
You just gotta get by the first act, it's there for a reason.

The first act might build up the emotional connections for later in the movie but that's hardly justification for it being boring. Even if you realise later in the movie that the slow start was needed, I don't want to be bored for an hour.
