At first it felt bizarre when there was no sound, every small noise in the cinema was amplified, but by the end of the movie I didn't even notice that there wasn't any talking; Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo were both so expressive in their gestures. I also can't get over how cool it was towards the end of the movie in a completely silent scene when everyone in the cinema was laughing.

And yeah, I saw it with a great audience who laughed throughout it. It's not every day you see a film like that. What this year did for me was made me truly realise the power of seeing a film in it's intended environment. We had Hugo in absolutely gorgeous 3D which totally drew you in to this world more so than any other 3D movie has or probably will. And Mission Impossible in IMAX. I don't know anyone who has seen it in IMAX. I'm going again. Holy **** that's amazing. Seeing The Artist with an audience is the only way I could watch it though. You not only forget where you are, but you forget WHEN you are.

I mean realistically, out of the general public who would want to see a black and white silent film, 83 years after the last one was made, unless it had won Best Picture? Good move financially, I guess. At least the cinema will (hopefully) be packed on opening night. From what I've heard, watching it amongst a large audience adds to the experience quite dramatically.

A silent film hasn't one an Oscar in 83 years. The last silent film to receive a wide release was in 1976 in the form of Mel Brooks 'Silent Movie'. There have been plenty of low-key silent released over the years, just never any in the mainstream.
