Hobo With A Shotgun is an interesting movie to take in; based upon a faux trailer that appeared alongside the Canadian release of Grindhouse, Jason Eisener's directorial debut is completely B-grade, yet has shining moments that truly show off the potential this young director has.
The story follows a hobo (Rutger Hauer) who hitches a freight train to Hope Town, where he finds a city that is filled with crime, corruption and general degradation.
It is here that our beloved hobo runs into, and is threatened by the local druglord and his maniac sons, the cause behind all the mess unfolding in Hope Town. Hauer declares war against the criminals in the town, all with the help of his trusty new shotgun.
From there on out it's a bloody mess of over-the-top action, which never ceases to amaze. It's rude, it's crude and at times it can be tasteless, but it fits the Grindhouse aesthetic down to a tea.
Hauer should be commended on his portrayal of the hobo; a frightfully intense character that really shows Hauer's ability to deliver a great performance. One minute he's shooting a tonne of bad guys, the next he opens up to a moment of emotional fulfillment.
If you're looking for something that is over-the-top, ridiculous, but really shows off what a great actor and talented director can bring to the table, then Hobo with a Shotgun won't disappoint.
